Georg Eduard Maschwitz (born August 1, 1838 in Hamburg ; † May 8, 1909 in Buenos Aires ) was a German-Argentinian bank director.

Life

His father, Friedrich Rudolf Emil Maschwitz, a trained businessman, was born in Züllichau , Silesia in 1806 , and married Margaretha Sophia Luise Driesch from Güstrow , Mecklenburg in Hamburg in 1835 . Georg Eduard was born as the first son in 1838.

In 1858 Georg Eduard Maschwitz emigrated to South America . There he married Clara Rufina Horne Torres in Montevideo , Uruguay in 1860 . In 1860 he returned with his wife to visit Hamburg , where their first son of the same name, Georg Eduard Maschwitz, was born and baptized. Upon their return, the family moved to Buenos Aires , Argentina . Their second son, Carlos Maschwitz, was born here in 1862.

From 1862 Maschwitz worked in Buenos Aires for the Argentine Carrabasa Bank . This bank was bought a little later by the Bank of London and South America and Maschwitz was appointed director.

During the period from 1865 to around 1880/1885, the entire South American capital market was mainly covered by English banks. Well-known German and European credit institutions repeatedly withdrew from South America due to misjudgments, speculations and a lack of economic success . To make matters worse, economic turmoil and civil wars with neighboring countries in Argentina severely damaged the stability of the currency.

During this difficult time, Maschwitz succeeded in skilfully and unscathed the branch of the Bank of London through the economic crisis.

In October 1886, the founding meeting of the Deutsche Uebersee-Bank was held in Germany on the initiative of Deutsche Bank . There is evidence that Maschwitz was in Germany in 1886 and negotiated with Deutsche Bank .

In January 1887, following a resolution by the Supervisory Board, Deutsche Bank opened its Banco Alemán Transatlántico branch in Buenos Aires , with Maschwitz as director. Until 1905, the bank issued paper money in the Argentine currency with the signature of its director.

The Banco Alemán Transatlántico celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1987 as a branch of Deutsche Bank .
