Georg Florschütz (physician)
Johann Georg Karl Jacob Florschütz (born February 1, 1859 in Königsberg in Bavaria , † April 18, 1940 in Gotha ) was a German physician. He is considered the founder of German life insurance medicine.
Life
Georg Florschütz was the son of a later head forester in Weidach near Coburg and attended grammar school in Coburg. He then studied medicine at the Universities of Würzburg and Berlin from 1879 to 1884. In Würzburg he became a member of the Corps Bavaria in 1880 . After graduating as Dr. med. in 1884 he worked from 1885 to 1888 as an assistant doctor at the Deaconess Hospital Bethanien . From 1888 to 1893 he was physicist for the Tonna district .
From 1893 until his retirement, Florschütz was chief physician at Gothaer Lebensversicherungsbank . Together with the actuary Johannes Karup , he carried out medical-statistical studies, which were decisive for the further development of the statistical principles of life insurance. He worked at the Eulenberg'schen Realencyklopädie.
In his free time, he researched the prehistory and early history of the Gotha region. The discoveries of his excavations on the Seeberg , at Seebergen and Wechmar gained supraregional importance. The Gotha Museum for Regional History was opened on his initiative in 1928 and owes the foundation of the prehistory and early history department to him.
Awards
Georg Florschütz was appointed professor in 1903 in recognition of his scientific work. The city of Gotha erected a reconstruction of his tomb in the grove of honor at the main cemetery in Gotha and named Florschützstraße to the old Seeberg observatory in his honor.
