Georg Friedrich Wreede or Latinized Georgius Fredericius Wreede (* around 1635 in Uetze ; † February 29, 1672 in the Indian Ocean near Mauritius ) was governor of the then Dutch island of Mauritius from 1665 to 1672, with an interruption from 1668 to 1669. He also became known as the author of the first written records on the Khoekhoegowab .

Life

Wreede was born around 1635 in Uetze near Hanover . In 1659 he arrived in the service of the Dutch East India Company at the Cape of Good Hope . He had studied philology in Helmstedt and within four years he wrote a book in which he used the Greek alphabet to write down sentences in Khoekhoegowab - the language of the people called "Hottentoten" at the time - and added the Dutch translation to each . He sent the manuscript to Amsterdam, but it was never published and disappeared. It possibly went to Hiob Ludolf , a well-known linguist who was connected to Nicolas Witsen . Christian Juncker later published a biography of Ludolf, which contains a list of Khoekhoegowab words with a Latin translation.

In 1660 Wreede took part in an expedition to the Lepelle (at that time the Olifants River, "Elephant River"). In 1665 Zacharias Wagner sent him on an expedition with the aim of finding out whether the island of Martin Vaz could be used by ships; in May of the same year Wreede returned with maps. The expedition ship Pimpel continued to Mauritius and Wreede was appointed governor of the island by the captain. In 1668 his people withdrew their trust in him; he returned to Cape Town and Dirk Jansz Smient was appointed as his successor.

Wreede was then sent to Saldanha Bay , where the French East India Company was planning to set up after it withdrew from Madagascar . On June 6, 1669, Georg Wreede took over the management of the branch. A month later, however, he was transferred again and was back in Mauritius in October 1669. He drowned trying to reach the French island of Réunion in a self-made boat ; his successor as governor of Mauritius was Hubert Hugo.

In 1688, Olfert Dapper published the book Naukeurige Beschrijvingen der Afrikaenschegewesten (German: Conscientious Description of African Areas ) in Amsterdam , which presumably used Wreede's notes but did not mention its source.
