Georg Gliemeroth (born November 2, 1907 in Kassel , † September 18, 1982 in Stuttgart-Hohenheim ) was a German crop scientist.

Life path

Georg Gliemeroth first studied agriculture in Göttingen , later at the Agricultural University in Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1932. After three years as a business consultant in Mecklenburg , he joined the Institute for Crop Production at the University of Göttingen in 1935 as an assistant . In 1938 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on mixed wheat seeds . In 1946 he was appointed associate professor. In 1963 he followed a call to the chair for arable and crop production at the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim .

Research priorities

The water balance of the loess soils and its influence by the vegetation and tillage was clearly the main focus of his research in Göttingen. Gliemeroth recognized that only with detailed data on the growth and development of the plant roots can new knowledge be gained. Therefore, in addition to his measurements of the water balance and soil structure, he carried out extensive root studies. Many of the methods used for this purpose became trend-setting for further research in plant cultivation. He has published most of his research results in the “Zeitschrift für Acker- und Pflanzenbau”.

Also noteworthy are Gliemeroth's studies on nitrogen displacement in loess soils, the problems of nitrogen fertilization when growing legumes and the possibilities of improving soil fertility through appropriate humus fertilization. In Hohenheim he devoted himself mainly to crop rotation research for over ten years .

Gliemeroth's literature reports on research in his field, published in 1951 and 1953, are still the most important bibliographical source on the scientific activities of German crop science in the first years after the Second World War .
