Georg Heinrich Wappäus

Georg Heinrich Wappäus (born June 30, 1776 in Platenlaase as Jürgen Heinrich Wappaus , † July 25, 1836 in Hamburg ) was the founder of the line and the shipping company GH Wappäus in Hamburg.

biography

Georg Heinrich Wappäus came from an old farming family who had lived in Platenlaase since at least 1400 and was the son of Jochen Hinrich Wappaus (1741–1812) and Catharina Dorothea nee. Rehbeck (1739-1807).

At an unknown point in time, as a young man, he left his father's court and came to Hamburg. According to his daughter, he planned to become a wine merchant there. In one game, however, he lost all of his money, which is why he embarked as a sailor in the USA . Once there, he trained as a seaman in order to advance in society that he later became a captain . After longer stays there, he returned to Hamburg in 1805 due to a serious illness. In that year, on July 12th, he lost the upper bourgeoisie in Hamburg, which was influenced by the shipping company GH Wappäus, which he founded in the same year. The shipping company comprised a total of 20 ships, with the focus of the trips on the West Indies , the Caribbean and Venezuela .

With his wife Anna Catharina Sophia Verw. Lorenzen born Jörst, daughter of a Hamburg linen dealer, had four children: Johann Eduard , Anna Wilhelmine, Adolph Heinrich and the future deaconess Emilia Maria Elisabeth.
