Johann Eduard Wappäus
Johann Eduard Wappäus (born May 17, 1812 in Hamburg , † December 16, 1879 in Göttingen ) was a German geographer and statistician .
biography
Wappäus, son of the shipowner Georg Heinrich Wappäus and Anna Catharina Sophia born. Jörst, studied in Göttingen and Berlin and undertook a trip to the Cape Verde Islands and Brazil from 1833–34. In 1842 he married Sophie Frederike Wehner (1822–1846), a daughter of Johann Andreas Wehner . On May 11, 1844 their son Johann Andreas Georg Heinrich Wappäus († November 14, 1893) was born, who later received his doctorate in law . After the death of his first wife, he married Henriette Hausmann (1812-1859) in 1847, the daughter of Professor Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann
In 1838 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in Göttingen, where he was appointed associate professor in 1845 and full professor in 1854 and died on December 16, 1879.
He had been an assessor since 1851 and a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences since 1860 .
In 1847 he took over the editing of the 7th edition of the Handbook of Geography and Statistics "by Stein and Ferdinand Hörschelmann, for which he himself the general geography (Leipzig 1849), North America (1855), Central and South America (1858 to 1867) and Brazil (1871). A number of valuable treatises by Wappäus contain the Göttingische Schehrten advertisements , which he edited from 1848–1863 and again from 1874–1879.
He also published the correspondence between Hausmann and Carl Ritter (Leipzig 1879). Otto Gandil published his lectures on statistics as an introduction to the study of statistics (Leipzig 1881).
