Georg Heinrich Werndly

Georg Heinrich Werndly , also George Henric Werndly , (born October 25, 1693 in Beesten , † 1744 in the Dutch East Indies ) was a German Evangelical Reformed missionary preacher and associate professor for oriental languages.

Werndly was born on October 25, 1693 as the son of the later Lingen preacher J. Th. Werndly in Beesten (Emsland).

From 1705 he attended the Latin school in Lingen , and from 1711 switched to the academic grammar school Lingen , today grammar school Georgianum (Lingen) , in order to study theology and the oriental languages ​​there. In 1717 he was mission preacher in Java and Sumatra (East India) and in 1719 preacher in Makassar ( Celebes ).

In Amsterdam he published the Bible in Malay in 1730 and a Malay grammar in 1736.

In 1737 he became associate professor for oriental languages ​​and third preacher in Lingen . In 1740 he took over a professorship in Harderwijk .

In 1744 he died in the Dutch East Indies.
