Georg Kirner

Georg "Schorsch" Kirner (born February 1936 in Holzkirchen (Upper Bavaria) ) is a German adventure traveler , amateur ethnologist and author .

Life

Georg Kirner was born as the son of a farmhand and a maid in Haid, a district of Holzkirchen , and grew up as a shepherd boy on an alp with his grandmother. He later made the acquaintance of the entrepreneur Ludwig Bölkow , who helped him to get a commercial training and a job as a customs and business specialist.

At the age of 24, Kirner made his first bicycle trip to Italy, then to Africa. In total, he traveled to almost every country in the world in his life: According to his own statements, there were 197 countries. He documented the life of indigenous peoples who had little contact with modern civilization. On his travels, he covered 40,000 kilometers by bicycle and survived three plane crashes.

From January 2003, at the age of 67, he went on an expedition on skis to the South Pole, making him both the first Bavarian and the oldest person to ever reach the South Pole on foot. On January 1, 2018, Kirner was in the special show The most spectacular of Hard to believe! to guest.

In 2013-2016, Kirner worked as a hiking expert in the Bayerischer Rundfunk TV magazine Wir in Bayern .

In 1993 Georg Kirner was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his commitment to indigenous peoples .
