Georg Lang (born March 14, 1840 in Deining ; † May 25, 1900 in Mittersthal ) was a church painter of the Nazarenes style who worked around his homeland.

Life

Georg Lang was born out of wedlock in Deining in the Upper Palatinate and probably stayed for a long time in Vienna, where he studied the Nazarene style. When he was repainting the ceiling in the Mittersthal church on May 25, 1900, he fell from the scaffolding and died. He was buried in Deining on May 27, 1900.

The ceiling frescoes , altar paintings and pictures of the Stations of the Cross by Georg Lang decorate numerous churches in the Neumarkt area . Works painted by Lang in the style of the Nazarenes corresponded to the spirit of piety of the time and also represent it: transfigured depictions of the life of Jesus in bright, luminous colors as well as paintings of saints with pious but serious faces, clad in long robes with distinctive, high-contrast Drapery. In the period after the Second World War, these pictures, which were then regarded as "kitschy", were not respected and were thrown away or even painted over. Only today are people beginning to appreciate their artistic value again.

On the 100th anniversary of his death in 2000, the municipality of Deining erected a monument to him with a bronze bust on the town hall square. This should bring his artistic activity and his extensive work back into the public consciousness.
