Georg Liban

Georg Liban (real name Georg Weihrauch ; * 1464 probably in Liegnitz , Duchy of Liegnitz ; † after 1546) was a German classical philologist , composer and music theorist who taught at the University of Krakow .

Life

Liban studied at the University of Krakow in 1494/95, then presumably at the University of Cologne . In 1501 he returned to Cracow, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in 1502 and a master's degree in 1511 . He then gave lectures at the University of Kraków and worked from around 1506 to 1528 at the St. Mary's School. Here he was first cantor, from 1514 rector and taught Latin prosody , Greek and music. In 1535 he published the first grammar of the Greek language in Poland.

Several compositions by Liban appeared between 1522 and 1545. As a contribution to Filippo Buonaccorsi's Carmen Sapphicum in vitam sancti Stanislai episcopi cracoviensis, Polonorum gentis patroni , the four-part hymn Exsurgat omnis populus was written around 1522 . In 1535 the funeral chant In clarissimi Poloniae Praesulis Maecenatisque D. Petri Tomicii Cracoviensis olim Episcopi obitum… Saphicon. Ipso funeris die in aede Divi Stanislai decantatum , 1538 the elegy Ad generosum et Magnificum Dominum Franciscum Bonerum .

The composition Ortus de Polonia from 1501 appeared as part of his treatise on the recitation of liturgical texts De accentuum ecclesiasticorum exquisita ratione (1539), a manual for monastery schools. In the De Musicae laudibus oratio (1540), Liban published eight four-part Magnificat as musical examples -Toings and the four-part movement of Psalm 114 In exitu Israel de Aegypto .
