Georg Luis (born May 12, 1816 in Hamburg ; † April 16, 1885 there ) was a German architect .

Life

Born as the son of an officer of the Hamburg building deputation, Luis followed his father's choice of profession and trained as an architect under the Hamburg building director Carl Ludwig Wimmel . Between 1840 and 1842 he undertook extensive study trips through Germany , Italy and France , where he got to know the contemporary trends in architecture.

As a result of the Hamburg city fire in 1842, the just 26 year old Luis returned to his hometown, where a wide range of activities opened up for architects. After he returned to the Hamburg building deputation for a short time, he went into business for himself in November of that year. In the decades that followed, Luis was one of Hamburg's most important private architects and planned numerous buildings, mainly residential buildings, both in the city center and in Wandsbek . With its late classicist architecture influenced by the arched style , it shaped the Hamburg cityscape in the mid-19th century. Georg Luis was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 .
