Georg Majoris

Georg Majoris (* around 1440 in St. Niklaus ; † March 19, 1506 ) was a Valais notary and politician . At that time he was one of the most powerful men in Upper Valais.

The office remained in the Venetz family until 1544, who soon named themselves Majoris because of their office. The best-known Majoris was Georg, who in 1485 with his relatives took the oath of feudal oath to the bishop of Sion, Jost von Silenen, for the estate of St. Niklaus.

His father, Johannes Majoris, was a wealthy and respected St. Niklauser who temporarily lived in Sion. In 1472 Georg built a house in St. Niklaus. In 1485 he became a citizen of Visp . Georg Majoris had three daughters.

Professional and political career

From 1465 Georg Majoris was a notary. In addition to his political career, he practiced his profession all his life beyond the borders of the Valais.

From 1476 Georg Majoris was temporarily secretary and chancellor of the Valais district administrator . 1489 In 1502 he was Burgermeister of Visp, 1490 and 1504 Grosskastlan of Zenden Visp and 1493 Landvogt of the sub-Wallis. In addition, he made it twice in the years 1494–1495 and 1499–1501 to the Valais governor (head of state). Georg Supersaxo served him as land clerk in 1494 and 1495 . On December 6, 1499, Georg Majoris presided over the district administrator in the Valais capital , who accepted the papal appointment of Matthäus Schiner as Bishop of Sion. In 1503 he was sent to a meeting of the Swiss Confederation as a representative of the Valais .
