The de Chouson and Riedmatten family

The oldest known representative of the "de [von] Chouson" family, which was a respected local family in the Nikolaital , was Henselmus (Anselm) Maior de Chouson or von St. Niklaus, since he met Meier Walter von Visp and the Knights Girold in 1218 von Ernen and Wilhelm von Visp appeared as a witness at a tithe purchase in Visp. As a respected clergyman, Johannes von Chouson witnessed the will of the rich canon on April 5, 1272, and Heinrich II von Raron, who was later elected bishop . Johannes von Chouson hung the family seal on the will, which shows the representation of a strongly stylized flower which seems to end in a clover leaf.

Towards the end of the 13th century there were forms of the family name such as "Im Hove / Howe" and "Sigrist" or "Matricularius". The tower-like Meier Tower in St. Niklaus Dorf , which was built in 1273, where the Chousons or Meier of the valley lived and which is now home to the world's first mountain guide museum, must be regarded as the “courtyard” . At the turn of the 15th century the family name "von [de] Riedmatten" was finally adopted. The family name Riedmatten comes from the hamlet of Riedmatten in St. Niklaus or Chouson , which is located in the north of today's municipality of St. Niklaus VS, where the Riedbach flows into the Vispe .

Life

The most important representative of the de Chouson family is Canon and Grand Cantor Walter de Chouson. In 1246 Anselm de Chouson, who is called Maior in 1251, mentions him as his uncle . Consequently, Walter de Chouson must have been a brother of the Meier Henselmus de Chouson.

In 1227 Walter de Chouson, as canon, was the first witness in the important purchase of the brothers Heinrich and Amadeus von Raron , who acquired the rights of the von Aigle family above Leuk ; also in 1228 with the large donation from the dean of the cathedral and later Valais bishop Boso de Granges . Since the year 1233 he raised his own documents in Naters , Leuk and Sitten .

1239 was the deacon . In 1242 in Aosta he notarized the promise of the Lords of Courmayeur to sell their rights to the Vice Dominate of Sion.

Walter de Chouson has been Grand Cantor of the Cathedral Foundation since March 12, 1244 . On June 26, 1245 he was a witness in Sion with the Valais bishop Heinrich I von Raron . On February 9, 1248 he was officially certified as Grand Cantor for the last time.
