biography

Georg Philipp Heberlein was born in Braubach am Rhein and completed an apprenticeship as a dyer in Koblenz . After several years of traveling as a journeyman , he came to Wattwil in Toggenburg . Linen weaving had been very widespread there since early modern times , but was gradually being displaced by the up-and-coming cotton manufacturers . From 1828 Heberlein worked in various yarn dyeing factories in Wattwil and in Neckertal . He married Elisabeth Ambühl in 1833.

In 1835 he founded his own dye works with a house on a piece of land in the Wattwiler Rietwis. The Heberleins yarn dyeing factory grew rapidly and soon employed 20 journeymen. One of the reasons for the rapid growth is said to have been Heberlein’s high level of expertise, for which he received recognition at the Swiss Industrial Exhibition in Bern . In 1845 Georg Philipp and Elisabeth Heberlein-Ambühl and their ten children were granted citizenship in Wattwil.

In 1873 Georg Philipp Heberlein handed over the management of the company to his sons Eduard and Georg, who went from purely handcraft production to factory production. In the early 20th century, Heberlein & Co. under the management of his grandchildren Eduard Heberlein and Georges Heberlein continued to develop successfully in the field of textile dyeing and textile printing and became one of the most important textile companies in Switzerland.

Georg Philipp Heberlein is said to have been very talented musically. He died in Wattwil in 1888.
