Georg Rieper (* 1909 in Steinau , † 1982 in Bremen ) was a German entrepreneur and inventor of the Rollax roller blinds and the glass principle.

biography

He was the only son of seven children of the businessman Christian Rieper and his wife Carolin Rieper. Rieper spent his childhood and youth in Steinau and Bad Bederkesa in the Landkreis Hadeln .

After completing secondary school, he started his own business at a young age. In 1934 he founded the company Rollo Rieper in Bremen. Here Rieper initially produced spring blinds and sold them to private households and other companies in retail.

After the Second World War , Rieper founded a total of twelve branches in Bremen, Bremerhaven , Cuxhaven , Stade and the surrounding area. In addition to his inventions, Rieper also sold the Onax blinds, carpets and accessories produced in Bremen through his branches.

Act

As an alternative to the spring roller blind, Georg Rieper invented the Rollax roller blind, which was later also called the drop roller blind. This patent consisted in the fact that the roller blind fabric or the roller blind film was pulled down by its own weight by a drop rod inserted in the pocket. A cord installed on the side of the roller blind shaft wound up when the rod fell on the shaft - similar to the belt pull of today's roller blind technology.

In addition to this simple principle, which made it possible to dispense with a spring balancer that was already common at the time (such as the spring roller blind or snap roller blind), Georg Rieper developed the glass roller blind, which he also named and patented, for which he ultimately received the Rudolf Diesel Medal received in bronze. This patent was an alternative to the double glazing, which was still very expensive at the time, as it represented a roller blind system that was installed in front of the window niche as protection against the cold in winter. It consisted of a transparent film that was attached to the wall using guide rails installed on the side, thus creating a heat-insulating layer of air between the window and the roller blind.

death

After Rieper had suffered a heart attack with a minor stroke due to his arteriosclerosis in 1980 , he lived in Bremen for two years with recurring pain. Georg Rieper died in 1982 due to another heart attack.

He was buried at the grave of his parents in the cemetery in Odisheim near his birthplace Steinau.
