Georg Thonet
Georg Thonet (born April 12, 1909 in Bistritz am Hostein , † July 22, 2005 in Frankenberg (Eder) ) was a German furniture entrepreneur.
Career
Thonet was the great-grandson of the carpenter Michael Thonet , who founded the furniture manufacturer Gebrüder Thonet in Vienna in 1849 . After graduating from high school, he studied at the Technical University of Vienna and graduated in 1935 as a graduate engineer. He then completed his knowledge in London. In 1937 he took over the management of the Thonet factory in Frankenberg and ran the company until 1994. After the Second World War, he rebuilt the completely destroyed factory and led the company back to international success, mainly with Bauhaus tubular steel furniture.
For more than 30 years he was a board member of the Association of the German Furniture Industry (VDM) and President of the Commission Marques de Qualitée de l'Union européenne de l'Ameublement .
He expanded the collection of historical Thonet furniture, which has been on display in the Thonet Museum since 1989 .
