Georg Veith

Georg Veith (born March 9, 1875 in Černovice ; † September 3, 1925 near Zile ) was an Austrian officer, ancient historian and herpetologist .

Life

Georg Veith was an Austro-Hungarian artillery officer, but from an early age he also had an interest in historical and scientific topics. As a young officer, he was already exploring historical Roman battlefields in the Balkans from his garrison town of Bilek and at the same time exploring the reptile fauna there.

Veith's first historical publication appeared in 1900. Other publications followed, often in collaboration with Johannes Kromayer , the editor of a series of books on ancient battlefields. In battlefield research, Veith combined his military skills as a staff officer in the Austro-Hungarian Army with the natural scientist's powers of observation. In 1921 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Münster for his historical research . Several essays on the events of the First World War, the manuscript on the fall of the Austro-Hungarian army, which has only been published in excerpts to this day, and music reviews in Viennese magazines show further facets of his activity. At the age of 50, Colonel a. D. slain by two shepherds on the ancient battlefield of Zela. Georg Veith was buried in the Turkish cemetery there.

Veith's estate came to the Austrian war archive in 1926 . In 1950, a Georg Veith memorial exhibition was held at the Natural History Museum in Vienna, as a result of which the estate was inventoried.
