Vetter came from a poor background. The counts of the Erbach-Schönberg family and Königer Bürger supported him so that he could attend the Grand Ducal College for ivory carving and related professions in Erbach (Odenwald) . After attending school, Vetter lived as a freelance painter in Bad König.

His motifs were mainly nature studies, animal studies and hunting motifs that he found on hikes through the Odenwald and Spessart . Vetter's sketchbooks and many drawings are exhibited in Erbach Castle and in the Georg Vetter Museum in Bad König.
