Samuel Henri Geiser (born December 24, 1884 in Corgémont , † May 28, 1973 in Biel / Bienne ) was a Swiss farmer and Anabaptist researcher .

Life

Geiser was born on a farm near Corgémont in the Bernese Jura . He received his first training in a German-speaking Anabaptist school. He worked as a farmer in various places, for example in Saint-Ursanne , Tavannes and Châtelat . From 1929 he also held the office of preacher, and from 1941 he was the elder of the Anabaptist congregation Moron- Kleintal.

In addition to his job as a farmer, he began to be interested in the history of the Church and Anabaptists in the 1920s. He was stimulated by reading the Martyr's Mirror . He began to compile an extensive collection of Anabaptist documents (letters, records, manuscripts and prints). A large part of this collection is now in the archive of the Conference of Mennonites in Switzerland (Old Anabaptists) in Corgémont. Geiser published his knowledge of Anabaptist history for the first time in 1931 in a book entitled The Baptist Churches . In 1971 the book was published again in a greatly expanded version. Geiser also wrote various articles on Swiss Anabaptist history for the Mennonite Lexicon . In 1972 he was awarded an honorary doctorate for his work by the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich . Geiser spent the last years of his life in Brügg .
