Georg W. Koeltzsch
Georg Wilhelm Költzsch (born October 19, 1938 in Chemnitz ; † February 2, 2005 in Essen ) was a German art historian . He was director of the Saarland Museum in Saarbrücken and the Folkwang Museum in Essen.
Life
Kötzsch studied art history and classical archeology and received his doctorate in 1973 at Saarland University , where he also worked as an assistant from 1972 to 1978. In 1978 he was appointed director of the Saarland Museum. In 1980 the exhibition " Artists of the Bridge " took place under his leadership. The catalog texts for the exhibition still bear witness to the intensive processing of this important exhibition that would no longer be conceivable in the current situation. In the Saarland , Költzsch primarily promoted the art of the Informel and established the reputation of the modern gallery not only with an excellent collection of expressionist paintings, which his predecessor Rudolf Bornschein in particular collected, but also with the newly defined collecting area of "Informel" and especially informal painting (gestural painting). In October 1982 he invited to the Symposium Informel in the Modern Gallery of the Saarland Museum (October 8-12, 1982). From May 8th to May 19th In June 1983 there was an exhibition "Informel", which still shapes the concept of the Saarland Museum today.
In 1986, Költzsch drafted the plans for the conversion of the former district office in his place of residence St. Ingbert into a generously dimensioned and professionally equipped art museum, the Museum St. Ingbert . He placed the "Permanent Albert Weisgerber Collection" on a total area of 1500 m², and he also created partially fully air-conditioned rooms for temporary exhibitions with works by internationally renowned artists. Until his career change, Költzsch was the artistic director of the museum on a voluntary basis and built up the museum's reputation with top-class exhibitions (graphic works by Max Ernst , Alfred Hrdlicka and others).
From 1988 to 2002 he was director of the Folkwang Museum in Essen. During this time important exhibitions took place, for example: " Vincent van Gogh and the modern age" ( 1990 ) and " Edward Hopper and the photography" (1992). His last function was the moderation and ideas for the application of the Ruhr region as European Capital of Culture 2010 at the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR).
He died at the age of 66 after a serious illness.
