life and work
After studying zoology for several semesters , Warnecke switched to law and, after successfully completing his degree, embarked on a legal career, which he completed as district court director in Kiel .
In parallel to his job, he continued to deal with zoological issues, especially ornithology and entomology , especially lepidopterology . In this field he was respected in the professional world with over 450 publications. His main interest was in questions of faunistics , for example the species population in the area around Hamburg, the Niederelbeggebiet , Schleswig-Holstein and the islands of Sylt and Heligoland . In addition, he dealt with topics such as general distribution, migratory behavior, emergence of boreoalpine species, clarification of species groups and shapes, systematics and new descriptions of butterflies.
In addition to his purely scientific activities, Warnecke has always understood how to convey his knowledge to a broader public and at the same time to promote nature conservation . With his books “What butterfly is that?” And “Onze Vlinders”, written in German and Dutch, he familiarized interested laypeople with the world of butterflies and provided them with identification aids.
