George of Eudocias

Georg von Eudokias (originally Georg Wagner , French George Wagner ; born March 10, 1930 in Berlin ; † April 6, 1993 in Asnières-sur-Seine ) was an Orthodox theologian and from 1981 to 1993 archbishop ( exarch ) of the archbishopric of the Orthodox communities Russian tradition in Western Europe of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople .

biography

Wagner came from a Protestant family, but his mother Marthe Wagner was interested in Orthodoxy and attended the Orthodox Church of St. Wladimir on Nachodstrasse. Here Georg Wagner came into contact with Orthodoxy and converted to the Orthodox faith in 1948. From 1949 to 1953 he studied at the Institut de Théologie Orthodoxe Saint-Serge in Paris and received his Maîtrise from Cyprian Kern in 1953 . In 1954 he studied in the Chalki seminary . He was ordained a deacon on May 29, 1955 in Paris and a priest on June 6, 1955. He then worked as a priest for the Russian Orthodox Church in Berlin. In 1962, he also began studying at the Free University of Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1971.

In 1964 he joined the exarchate of the Orthodox parishes of Russian tradition in Western Europe, which was independent from the Moscow Patriarchate , received the rank of archpriest in 1965 and became head of the parishes of the exarchate in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1966. In 1967 he became professor of canon law at the Institut Saint-Serge, and from 1969 he also taught liturgical studies there. In 1971 Georg Wagner became a monk and received the rank of Archimandrite . On June 30, 1971, he was appointed titular bishop of Eudocias in Asia Minor by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and was ordained bishop on October 3, 1971 in Paris. In 1973 he gave up his activity at the Institut Saint-Serge and in 1974 became pastor of the Christ-Sauver parish in Asnières near Paris.

On May 1, 1981 he was elected Exarch of the Orthodox Congregations of Russian Tradition in Western Europe, confirmed by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, made archbishop and enthroned on July 5, 1981 in the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Paris.

In 1989 he resumed teaching at the Institut Saint-Serge and was elected its rector in 1991. At the same time he became pastor of the parish of Saint-Serge. In 1992 he had to stop these activities due to illness.
