George A. Woods
George A. Woods (born January 26, 1926 in Lake Placid , NY , † August 11, 1988 ) was an American literary critic and children's book author.
Life
George Allan Woods grew up in the Adirondacks , an area characterized by summer homes and seasonal business. In his first novel, Vibrations , which has autobiographical traits, he described the seasonal course of life in the Adirondacks: Summer meant people, change, faces that had not been seen for a year. [...] The summer people pumped us [...] full of money and life . Woods was an editor and book critic for children's and youth literature from 1963 to 1984 for the New York Times and its supplement The New York Times Book Review . In the early 1970s he wrote two books for children and young people. The protagonist of his first book, Vibrations, is a seventeen year old looking for his own identity. The second book, Catch a Killer, is about twelve-year-old Andrew who hides in an abandoned house and witnesses a crime there. Catch a Killer received the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award in 1974 and was translated into German.
