George Chalmers

George Chalmers (* 1742 with Fochabers in Scotland ; † May 31, 1825 in London ) was a Scottish historian , biographer and political essayist .

Life

Chalmers studied in Aberdeen and Edinburgh , the law and then immigrated to Baltimore , where he a decade lawyer worked. In 1776, at the outbreak of the War of Independence , the avowed royalist returned to Great Britain and finally got a position on the Board of Trade , which he filled until his death.

Chalmers wrote numerous biographies and works on the political situation in Great Britain and in the former British colonies of North America.

Caledonia , a topographical and historical description of Great Britain, of whose four planned volumes he completed three, as well as the biography Life of Mary, Queen of Scots , in which he sided with Mary Queen of Scots , are considered Chalmer's main works . Contemporary German translations are available for both works .
