George Dixon (basketball player)

George Martin Dixon (born April 10, 1901 in Vallejo , California - † August 23, 1991 in San Francisco , California) was an American basketball and rugby union player. With the US rugby union selection he was Olympic champion in 1924 , as a star guard of the Golden Bears of UC Berkeley he was in 1926 and 1927 two-time basketball All-American .

Although he had previously played little rugby, he was named to the Eagles' squad for the 1924 Olympic rugby tournament in 1924. As an inner three-quarters he was used both against Romania and in the final against France. However, these two tests remain his only international appearances.

However, his main sport was basketball. From 1924 to 1927 Dixon played for the Golden Bears of UC Berkeley. In 1926 and 1927, they remained undefeated under his leadership. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1986 and to Cal's All-Century Men's Basketball Team in 2009.

After his active time he worked in the oil business until World War II . During the war he became a fighter pilot in the United States Navy . After the war he remained loyal to aviation as a civilian professional pilot.
