George Earle Welby

Sir George Earle Welby KCMG ( January 9, 1851 - August 25, 1936 ) was a British diplomat .

Life

George Earle Welby was the only son of George E. Welby, a clergyman in Barrowby, Lincolnshire. He entered the foreign service on August 22, 1874 and passed his attaché examination on December 2, 1874. On June 7, 1875, he was sent as an attaché to the British Embassy in Buenos Aires, and in December 1876 promoted to Third Secretary. After taking up secretary positions at the British Embassy in Stockholm and Brussels , he was British Ambassador to Colombia from 1898 to 1906 .

With the completion of his career as an ambassador, he was inducted into the Order of St. Michael and St. George as Knight Commander in 1906 .
