George Henry FitzRoy, 4th Duke of Grafton (born January 14, 1760 , † September 28, 1844 ) was an English nobleman and politician.

Origin and family environment

George Henry FitzRoy's family came from an illegitimate connection between the English King Charles II of the House of Stuart and his temporary favorite Barbara Villiers , whose son Henry FitzRoy, who was raised to Duke of Grafton on September 11, 1675, George Henry derives his ancestry . He himself was born as the 1st son of Augustus FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton (1735-1811) and Anna Liddell (1737-1804) on January 14, 1760 in London. He died in Euston Hall , his family home, on September 28, 1844.

Life and political career

George Henry FitzRoy, the lifetime of his father bore the courtesy title Earl of Euston, was at Harrow School educated and then studied at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge . He then joined the British Navy, where he rose to the rank of Vice Admiral . However, he will only have performed active service in the Navy sporadically, as he was a member of the lower house from 1782 to 1811. In 1782 he was elected for the constituency of Thetford in the House of Commons until 1784, after which he was elected MP for the constituency of the University of Cambridge from 1784 to 1811 . He was also from 1790 to 1844 as representative of the Crown Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk County .

After his father's death on March 14, 1811, he inherited his title and hereditary seat in the House of Lords and was 4th Duke of Grafton. In 1834 he was awarded the Order of the Garter .

George Henry FitzRoy was married to Lady Charlotte Waldgrave (1761-1808) since November 16, 1784, with whom they had 11 children, most of whom died as children. He was followed as the 5th Duke by his son Henry FitzRoy (1790–1863).
