George Gordon, 15th Earl of Sutherland

George Gordon, 15th Earl of Sutherland (born November 2, 1633 in Dornoch , † March 4, 1703 ) was a Scottish peer and politician.

Life

He came from a branch of the Clan Gordon and was the second son of John Gordon, 14th Earl of Sutherland , from his first marriage to Lady Jean Drummond, daughter of James Drummond, 1st Earl of Perth . After his older brother John died in 1637, he used the courtesy title of Lord Strathnaver as his father's apparent marriage .

In 1662 he took over the administration of his father's lands. When his father died in October 1679, he inherited his title of nobility as Earl of Sutherland . In June 1680 he handed over the management of his lands to his eldest son in return for an annual lease of 8,000 Merks . In the following years he traveled to continental Europe and lived with his wife in Rotterdam in 1685 .

On the occasion of the Glorious Revolution he returned to his homeland, possibly even in the wake of William of Orange . On March 14, 1689, he took part in the session of the Scottish Parliament in which Mary II and William of Orange were recognized as monarchs. In 1689 he was admitted to the Scottish Privy Council and provisionally appointed Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland .

He died in 1703 and was buried in Holyrood Abbey .

Marriages and offspring

He married on August 11, 1659 Lady Jean Wemyss (1629-1715), daughter of David Wemyss, 2nd Earl of Wemyss . He had four children with her:

On his death, his older son John, who had changed his family name to "Sutherland" in 1690, inherited his title of nobility.
