Sights and history

The town's cathedral was built at the beginning of the 13th century under the reign of King Alexander II and Gilbert de Moravia (Bishop of Moray) and consecrated in 1239, but it burned down in a fire in 1570 and was partly renovated in the historicizing Victorian style in the 19th century Rebuilt century. Gilbert's tomb, which is said to have been canonized, was in the church and was removed along with the bones at the time of the Reformation (1545).

Opposite the cathedral is Dornoch Castle , the oldest building of which dates back to the 12th century and was originally the seat of the Bishops of Caithness . In 1570, like the cathedral, it was set on fire in a feud between the McKay and Murray clans. Today it serves as a well-known and popular hotel.

In Dornoch there is a well-known golf course, which is considered one of the oldest golf courses in the world and where the well-known golf course designer Donald Ross began his career as a greenkeeper .

The Achaidh Cairn is a megalithic complex of the Orkney-Cromarty-Type (OC), west of Dornoch.
