John Sutherland, 16th Earl of Sutherland (baptized March 3, 1661 - June 27, 1733 ) was a Scottish - British peer , politician, and military man.

Life

He came from a branch of the Gordon clan and was the eldest son of George Gordon, 15th Earl of Sutherland from his marriage to Lady Jean Wemyss. As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Strathnaver from 1663 to 1703 . When his father died in 1703, he inherited his title of nobility as Earl of Sutherland . Through his great, great, great grandmother Elizabeth Sutherland, 10th Countess of Sutherland , he was a descendant and heir of the chiefs of the Sutherland clan . In 1690 he changed his family name from "Gordon" to "Sutherland" and in 1719 was recognized by the Court of the Lord Lyon as Chief of the Clan Sutherland.

In 1687 he was accepted into the Scottish Privy Council and in 1688 he supported the Glorious Revolution . In the Palatine War of Succession he served from 1694 to 1697 as a colonel in an infantry regiment in Flanders .

Because of his earl title, he was a member of the Scottish Parliament from 1703 . In 1706 he was one of the Scottish ambassadors to negotiate union with England . From 1707 to 1708 and from 1715 to 1733 he was a Scottish Representative Peer member of the British House of Lords .

In the British Army he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in 1715 and participated in the suppression of the Jacobite revolt . From 1715 to 1725 he held the offices of Lord Lieutenant of Caithness , Elgin , Nairn , Orkney , Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland . In 1716 he was accepted as a Knight Companion in the Thistle Order and in 1720 in the British Privy Council.

Marriages and offspring

His first marriage was on April 28, 1680, Lady Helen Cochrane († 1690), sister of John Cochrane, 2nd Earl of Dundonald . With her he had a son and three daughters:

  • William Sutherland, Lord Strathnaver (1683-1720), MP, ⚭ 1705 Catherine Morison († 1765);
  • Lady Jean Sutherland († 1747) ⚭ 1702 James Maitland, Viscount Maitland (around 1680–1709), son of John Maitland, 5th Earl of Lauderdale ;
  • Lady Helen Sutherland († 1749);
  • Daughter († 1686), died as an infant.

In his second marriage he married Lady Catherine Tollemache († 1703), widow of James Stuart, Lord Doune, son of Alexander Stuart, 5th Earl of Moray , and daughter of Sir Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Baronet. The marriage remained childless.

In his third marriage on August 12, 1727, he married Frances Hodgson († 1732), widow of Sir John Travell, daughter of Sir Thomas Hodgson. The marriage also remained childless.

When he died in 1733, his only son had already died. His second and oldest surviving son, William Sutherland, inherited his title of nobility .
