George Henry Kinahan

George Henry Kinahan (born December 19, 1829 in Dublin , † December 5, 1908 in Clontarf near Dublin) was an Irish geologist .

George Henry Kinahan was the third son of a total of 15 children of the barrister Daniel Kinahan (1797-1859) and his wife Louisa Anne Stuart (née Millar). He began training at Trinity College , Dublin, and received a degree in civil engineering in 1853. Kinahan was then briefly employed in the construction of the railway viaduct over the Boyne in Drogheda , before he joined the Geological Survey of Ireland led by Joseph Beete Jukes on August 21, 1854 .

On November 12, 1855, he married Harriette Anne Gerrard († 1892), with whom he had several children. Kinahan was promoted to "Senior Geologist" on March 23, 1861 and on March 1, 1869 to the "District Surveyor". He was retired on August 31, 1890.

Kinahan was the co-author of 26 Memoirs of the Geological Survey of Ireland . He has also written numerous articles for the Journal of the Geological Society of Dublin . Kinahan has written articles on Crannógs for the journals of the Kilkenny and South-East of Ireland Archaeological Society and the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland . He was also a frequent contributor to The Irish Naturalist and Geological Magazine . His most sustained publication was the Economic Geology of Ireland , based on lectures given to the Royal Geological Society of Ireland between 1886 and 1888 .

George Henry Kinahan was in the cemetery of the Church of Ireland in Avoca ( County Wicklow buried). One of his older brothers was John Robert Kinahan (1828–1863), who taught natural history at the Museum of Irish Industry .
