George Herbert Fryer
George Herbert Fryer (born May 21, 1877 in London , † February 7, 1957 ) was a British pianist, composer and music teacher.
life and work
Fryer was the son of George Henry Fryer and Clara Fryer. He studied in London from 1893 to 1895 at the Royal Academy of Music and from 1895 to 1900 at the Royal College of Music . There were Oskar Beringer and Franklin Taylor his teachers. Around 1900 he also studied with Ferruccio Busoni in Weimar. He took composition lessons from Charles Villiers Stanford . He made his debut as a pianist in London in 1898. His international concert activities have taken him to Europe, Canada, the USA, South Africa, Australia and the Far East.
From 1914 to 1916 he taught at the Institute of Musical Art in New York and from 1917 to 1947 at the Royal College of Music in London. He also acted as a jury member in competitions. He made numerous recordings on both audio reels and records (format: 78 revolutions / minute). He composed an intermezzo (op. 1), an old style suite (op. 11), the Countryside Suite (op. 16) and smaller piano pieces. He taught piano until his sudden death in February 1957.
