George Herrmann

George Herrmann (born April 19, 1921 in Moscow , † January 7, 2007 in Zurich ) was an American mechanical and civil engineer.

Herrmann came to Switzerland at the age of twelve and studied civil engineering at the ETH Zurich with a degree in 1945 and a doctorate in 1949. As a post-doctoral student he was in Canada and from 1951 an associate professor at Columbia University . In 1962 he became a professor at Northwestern University and in 1970 at Stanford University , where he headed the Applied Mechanics department and was retired in 1984. He then remained scientifically active and lived alternately in Stanford and Zurich.

In 1980 he received the Von Karman Medal .

He was buried in Davos .
