George Male

Charles George Male (born May 8, 1910 in West Ham , † February 19, 1998 ) was an English football player .

life and career

Male began his career at Clapton FC before he attended a trial at West Ham United , which was unsuccessful. In November 1929 he signed an amateur contract with Arsenal FC , which he upgraded to professional in 1930. The left midfielder won six English championships and two English cup wins with the Gunners as an initial substitute. At the end of the 1930s, Male became the captain of the Arsenal team. His career was interrupted by the Second World War. The Englishman served in the Royal Air Force in Palestine . After the war he played again for Arsenal and won his sixth and final championship title in 1948. Male played over 300 times for the Gunners without scoring a goal. His last game was against Grimsby Town in May 1948 . Internationally, he played 19 times for the English national football team . His debut was against Scotland on November 14, 1934. Male was even six times captain of the Three Lions team. The Englishman worked for Arsenal FC as a youth and amateur coach until 1975. After his career in football , he emigrated to Canada , where his son lived. George Male died on February 19, 1998 at the age of 87.
