George Mathers, 1st Baron Mathers KT PC DL ( February 28, 1886 - September 26, 1965 ) was a Scottish politician.

Life

Mathers was born in 1886 to George Mathers and Annie Barclay . He was educated at a school in Newtown St Boswells and was President of the Carlisle Chamber of Commerce . On June 6, 1916, Mathers married Edith Mary Robinson . There were no children from the marriage. After the death of his wife, Mathers married Jessie Newton Graham on January 31, 1940 .

Mathers was used as Deputy Lieutenant of Edinburgh . Between 1946 and 1948 Mathers held the position of Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland . He held this post again in 1951. In 1947 he was accepted into the Privy Council . On January 30, 1952, Mathers was promoted to 1st Baron Mathers, of Newtown St Boswells . In 1956 he was accepted into the thistle order . He died in 1965 without any descendants.

Political career

In 1919 Mathers was elected to the Carlisle City Council for the Labor Party . For the first time Mathers appeared in the general election in 1923 for elections at the national level. He ran in the constituency of Edinburgh West for the Labor Party against the liberal Vivian Phillipps and Ian Macintyre of the Unionist Party . Mathers received the lowest share of the vote of the three opponents with 25.7% and thus missed the entry into the British House of Commons . In the following general election in 1924 Mathers was able to increase his share of the vote, but not prevail against Macintyre. In the following general election in 1929 Macintyre did not run. Thanks to further votes, Mathers prevailed against his successor Wilfrid Normand and Vivian Phillipps and moved into the British House of Commons for the first time.

In parliament, Mathers acted as secretary to the parliamentary secretary under the state secretary for India and the state secretary for the colonies . In the following general election in 1931 , he left the lower house after a significant loss of votes against the unionist Normand. Mather's party colleague Emanuel Shinwell had lost the Linlithgowshire constituency mandate in the same election . In the following general election in 1935 , Mathers ran in this constituency against the unionist Adrian Baillie . He was able to improve the result of the Labor Party and prevail against Baillie. Between 1944 and 1945 Mathers held the position of Comptrollers of the Household . In the general election in 1945 Mathers held the mandate clearly against his unionist opponent. In parliament he held the positions of Treasurer of the Royal Household and Deputy Whip of the ruling parliamentary group until 1946 .

The Linlithgowshire constituency was dissolved in the run-up to the 1950 general election . Mathers therefore ran in the newly created successor constituency West Lothian . Again he clearly prevailed against his opponents. In the following general election in 1951 Mathers did not run.
