George McCorkle

George McCorkle (born October 11, 1946 in Chester , South Carolina , † June 29, 2007 in Lebanon , Tennessee ) was an American musician and songwriter . He gained fame primarily as the guitarist of the Marshall Tucker Band .

Life

McCorkle grew up as the youngest of three brothers in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After school and several years of service with the US Navy , including aboard the battleship USS Iowa , he founded the band The Toy Factory with his friend Toy Caldwell . In 1971 he was, again with Caldwell, a founding member of the Marshall Tucker Band , which quickly made a name for itself with its idiosyncratic mix of southern rock , country and jazz . For the band's fourth album, Searchin 'For A Rainbow (1975), he wrote the classic Fire on the Mountain , of which countless cover versions are now available.

In 1984 McCorkle left the band, moved to Tennessee and from then on worked mainly as a songwriter for various bands and solo artists. Among other things, he is co-author of the song Cowboy Blues , which country singer Gary Allan recorded in 1999. In the same year McCorkle released his solo album American Street .

In June 2007 he succumbed to cancer . He left behind his wife and a son.
