George Montague Butterworth (born May 12, 1858 in Bristol or Deerhurst , Gloucestershire , † December 12, 1941 in Christchurch , New Zealand ) was a British lawyer and tennis player .

Life

Butterworth was born in 1858 to Pastor George Butterworth and his wife Francis Maria Kaye. From 1872 to 1877 he attended Marlborough College . In 1874 he became a member of the Clifton Rugby Football Club in Bristol .

From 1880 to 1884 Butterworth took part in tennis tournaments. At the Wimbledon Championships in 1880 he reached the semifinals, but lost to Herbert Lawford in three sets. In 1883 he won the tournament in Waterford, Ireland .

From 1884 Butterworth worked as a solicitor . During the First World War he served in France in the Red Cross from 1915 to 1916. He later emigrated to New Zealand and settled in Christchurch . He died there in 1941 at the age of 83.

Butterworth was married to Clara Francis Warde. His nephew was the composer George Butterworth . His son Hugh Montague Butterworth was killed in France in 1915 at the Battle of Loos .
