Life

George Peabody Gooch was born in London on October 21, 1873, the son of a wealthy merchant, whose fortune allowed him to be economically independent throughout his life. He died in London on August 31, 1968.

Gooch, who was married to a German, studied history not only at the English universities of Cambridge and London, but also for three years in Berlin and also in Paris. Since he was economically independent, he did not seek a paid professorship after completing his studies, but contented himself with the title of Fellow at Trinity College in Oxford.

He was a liberal, also politically interested and active spirit, who sat as a Liberal MP from 1906 to 1910 and 1910 in the British House of Commons. Gooch, as an independent spirit, made a special effort to present history in context, whereby he was particularly noticeable for his analyzes of modern historiography and political ideas in his work on English political ideas in the 17th century and on political thoughts in England from Bacon to Halifax made a name. He also turned to German history with particular interest, promoting understanding of German history and historical studies.

In the course of his long life, his great biographies also gained attention, especially those about Frederick the Great (1947) and Louis XV. (1956).

He was also active in the relevant scientific societies and advisory bodies: from 1922 to 1925 he headed the Historical Association and from 1933 to 1936 the National Peace Council. In addition, the publication of the three-volume Cambridge History of British Foreign Policy (1922-1923) and the British Documents on the Origins of the War in 11 volumes (1926-1938) was transferred to him. In addition, he was from 1911 to 1960 editor of the liberal magazine Contemporary Review . For his scientific achievements he was accepted on May 31, 1954 as a foreign member of the Prussian order Pour le Mérite for science and the arts. In 1926 he became a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy . In 1927 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
