George Playfair, 2nd Baron Playfair

George James Playfair, 2nd Baron Playfair (born March 31, 1849 - December 26, 1939 ) was a British peer and military officer.

He was the only son of the chemist and politician Lyon Playfair , from his first marriage to Margaret Eliza Oakes. His father was promoted to Baron Playfair in 1892 .

He began a career with the Royal Artillery of the British Army and completed his officer training at the Royal Military Academy in 1870 . When he was temporarily on half pay , he volunteered on the Russian side for the Russo-Ottoman War and fought in the battles near Plevna (1877) and the Shipka Pass (1878). In 1885 he was promoted to major and in 1892 to lieutenant colonel. In 1903 he was promoted to Brigadier-General and was responsible for coastal defense until 1906 . From 1903 to 1929 he was Colonel of Honor in the 2nd Highland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery .

When his father died in 1898, he inherited his title of nobility as 2nd Baron Playfair and thereby became a member of the House of Lords .

From his first marriage to Lucy Osborne Matthews († 1887) in 1877, he had a daughter, the Hon. Lucy Jessie Lyon Playfair, who married Major Lionel Culme Soltau-Symons in 1907. From his second marriage to Augusta Mary Hickman in 1888, he had a son, the Hon. Lyon George Henry Lyon Playfair (1888-1915), who fell childless as captain of the Royal Artillery in World War I.

He died in 1939 at the age of ninety. Since he did not leave any male descendants, his title of nobility expired upon his death.
