George Frank Vincent Sharples (born September 20, 1943 in Ellesmere Port ) is a retired English football player . Mostly acting as an outside runner , he was in the squad of Everton , which won the English championship in 1963 . However, his contribution to this success was only small with two inserts and in the second half of the 1960s he came more regularly to the Blackburn Rovers to train.

Athletic career

Sharples was trained in the youth department of Everton FC and was an English selection player as a student and in youth. Not long after his 17th birthday, he made his debut in a first division game of the "Toffees" and represented regular Jimmy Gabriel in defensive midfield in the 1-1 draw at home against West Bromwich Albion . He completed five other competitive games (four times in the championship) in the 1960/61 season, where he mostly took the position of left outer runner for Brian Harris , while this had to help out on the field elsewhere. However, Sharples waited in vain for the final sporting breakthrough and so he only played a total of five more games in the following years before he left Everton. To win the English championship in 1963 , he contributed little when he acted again twice for Gabriel against Sheffield Wednesday (4-1) and Leyton Orient (0-3). So he had not qualified for an official championship medal.

In March 1965, Sharples hired at league rivals Blackburn Rovers . There he again took the left defensive half position, on which the Irish international Mick McGrath had acted for a long time in the season . Sharples' debut was 4-0 at home against West Ham United on March 20, 1965 , but the following 1965/66 season ended for Blackburn with relegation bottom of the table . In this Sharples had completed 29 league games and scored three goals - the first of them on the occasion of the season opener at Fulham (2: 5). The return to the English elite class failed Sharples with Blackburn in the next few years and on March 1, 1969 he played his league game for Blackburn against Derby County (2-4).

The last club station was for Sharples in the 1971/72 season of the fourth division FC Southport and then he ended his professional career due to injury.
