James Gabriel (born October 10, 1940 in Dundee , † July 10, 2021 in Phoenix (Arizona) ) was a Scottish football player and football coach.
Player career
Gabriel began his active career with the Tyneside Boys Club and Dundee North End. In 1957 he came to Dundee United after good performances . He made his debut for the professional team of the Scots on August 13, 1958 in the Scottish Cup against FC Motherwell . In 1960 he left Scotland for Liverpool . Gabriel signed on to Everton for a fee of £ 27,000 . With the English he won the local championship in 1963 and the cup in 1966. In March 1967 he had to leave the Toffees. The Southampton FC paid a transfer fee of £ 42,500 for the Scots.
After only a year he moved to AFC Bournemouth and then to Swindon Town . In 1974 Gabriel moved to the USA , where he worked for the Seattle Sounders for five years . From 1977 on, until his replacement in 1979, he was even the player-coach of the West Coast footballers. Internationally, he was used twice for the Scottish national football team . He was the captain of Scotland's U-23 team six times.
Coaching career
After two years as a player-coach in Seattle and a championship final that was lost, he moved to the San José Earthquakes . After only two years he ended his coaching career in the USA . In 1986 he returned to England and coached the AFC Bournemouth . From 1990 he was active in the coaching staff of Everton FC . In 1990, 1993 and 1994 Gabriel was even the head coach of Toffees as an interim trainer. The Scot remained in the coaching staff of the Liverpool men until 1997 . In the same year he returned to his second home in the USA and was active in the coaching staff of his heart club Seattle Sounders until 2005 . Gabriel has been retired since 2005.
Age
Gabriel suffered from Alzheimer's disease and died on July 10, 2021 in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 80.
