George Stanich
George Stanich ( George Anthony Stanich ; born November 4, 1928 in Sacramento ) is a former American high jumper .
In 1948 he was seventh in the NCAA championship and sixth in the US championship. In the eliminations for the 1948 Olympic Games in London, he managed to qualify with a huge increase to 2.04 m as second behind Vern McGrew . While McGrew retired early in London, Stanich mastered the height of 1.95 m as well as five other athletes. Only the Australian John Winter jumped 1.98 m, and so Stanich got bronze behind the Norwegian Bjørn Paulson due to the number of failed attempts .
He also excelled in basketball while studying at the University of California, Los Angeles . In 1950 he decided to pursue a career as a professional baseball player with the Oakland Oaks and the Idaho Falls Russets.
