George Taliaferro Ward

George Taliaferro Ward (* around 1810 in Fayette County , Kentucky , † May 5, 1862 in Williamsburg , Virginia ) was an American politician ( United States Whig Party ) and officer in the Confederate Army .

Ward was a member of the Florida Territorial Council from 1833 to 1834 . He represented Florida between 1838 and 1839 at its Constitutional Convention in Leon County . He then ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Congress in 1841 and in 1848 for a seat in the US Senate . In 1852 he was an unsuccessful candidate for governor of Florida. He also represented Florida in 1861, first at its Secession Convention and then in the Provisional Confederate Congress . In the same year he also ran for the office of Senator of the Confederate States . He served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War , where he held the rank of colonel in the 2nd Florida Infantry . Ward met his death on May 5, 1862, while leading his regiment into the Battle of Williamsburg . He was then buried in the Episcopal Cemetery in Williamsburg.
