George Jonas Whitaker Hayward (born June 9, 1839 , † August 1870 in Yasin near Kashgar , China) was a British explorer.

George W. Hayward carried out a trip from India over the Himalayas to East Turkistan on behalf of the London Royal Geographical Society from 1868-69 , determined the location of Kashgar and Jarkand through astronomical observations and brought home valuable information about soil design, nature and population of that empire . His report "Journey from Leh (Ladakh) to Yarkand and Kashgar" appeared in the journal of the society mentioned, vol. 40 (1870). In the same year (1869) he tried to penetrate the Pamir Mountains at the sources of Amu Darja , but was murdered by the natives in Yasin near Kashgar in August 1870. Compare "Letters from Hayward on his explorations in Gilgit and Yassin" (in the above-mentioned Journal, Volume 41).

Henry Newbolt published a poem on his death (He fell among the thieves, 1897).
