George William Buchanan

Sir George William Buchanan GCB GCMG GCVO PC (born November 25, 1854 in Copenhagen , Denmark , † December 20, 1924 ) was a British diplomat . Buchanan was, among other things, the British ambassador to Saint Petersburg from 1910 to 1917 .

Live and act

Buchanan was born in 1854 as the son of the British diplomat Sir Andrew Buchanan in the diplomatic mission of the United Kingdom in Denmark.

After he had held various diplomatic posts until 1910, such as that of the British representative in The Hague in 1908, Buchanan was sent to Saint Petersburg in 1910 as the British ambassador to Russia.

Despite his friendly relations, Buchanan did not succeed in persuading Tsar Nicholas II to reform the autocratic state system. According to Buchanan, this was primarily due to the influence of the traditional and "narrow-minded" anti-reform Tsarina and her court society.

After returning to London from Russia as a result of the revolutionary turmoil of 1917/1918, Buchanan decided to work as the British representative at the Holy See in Rome (1919–1921).
