George Wilson (comic artist)

George Wilson (born 1919 in Columbus , Ohio , † 2007 ) was an American comic and cover artist.

Life

Wilson practiced the art of painting and drawing and took courses at the Columbus School Of Design. He received a bachelor's and master's degree in fine art from Ohio State University . In 1939 he attended the Chinard Private Art School in Los Angeles .

During World War II , Wilson served as a flight instructor with the rank of captain. During this time he met Mickey Spillane , which resulted in a friendship and collaboration that lasted more than 60 years.

In 1947, George took the commercial direction, studying layout, design, engineering drawing, and the arts in advertising. This was followed from 1949 to 1951 as one of the first art directors in early television in Columbus, Ohio. He worked in Adak , Alaska and Mexico City before moving back to Columbus, Ohio in 1955. Here he worked with Gordon Keith in commercial advertising for 19 years. During this time he taught Fine Art and was a member of the Pen and Brush League and the Columbus Artists Association .

Wilson moved to Granville , New York in 1974 . He has taught art classes at the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls , New York.

For Gold Key Verlag he created comic book covers for the series Twilight Zone , Turok , Space Family Robinson / Lost In Space , Boris Karloff , Doctor Solar , Ripley's Believe It Or Not , Star Trek , Korak , UFO Flying Saucers , Tarzan , Magnus - Robot Fighter , Jungle Twins, Lone Ranger . He produced 15 cover pictures for the Perry Rhodan series at ACE books.
