Georges-Henri Rivière (born June 5, 1897 in Paris , † March 24, 1985 in Louveciennes ) was a French ethnologist and museologist. He realized new ideas in museum practice in France and is considered the founder of the eco-museums .

Life

After the suicide of his father Jules in 1912, a deputy director of the Office for Promenades and Green Spaces of the City of Paris, his uncle, the painter Henri Rivière , took the young Georges with him. He then took the middle name Henri from his uncle. Georges-Henri Rivière studied at the Paris Conservatory until 1925 and worked as a pianist in Paris in the 1920s. Through the acquaintance with musicians such as Duke Ellington , George Gershwin and Josephine Baker as well as the contact with visual artists of the time, he began to be interested in the art and culture of the non-European peoples. He finished his ethnological studies at the École du Louvre in 1928. Together with Georges Bataille , he founded the journal Documents and was its co-editor and editor from 1929–1930. During this time, new ideas and concepts for the redesign of the museums emerged. In the 1930s, Georges Henri Rivière participated in numerous exhibitions. He is the founder of the Paris Folklore Museum ATP ( Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires ), which emerged in 1937 from the Musée d'Ethnographie du Trocadéro , founded in 1878 . From 1948 to 1965 Rivière ran this museum as general director. From 1970 to 1982 Rivière was professor of museum studies at the University of Paris IV .
