Georges Dard

Georges Dard (born June 28, 1918 in Marseille ; † May 2, 2001 ibid) was a French football player who spent a significant part of his career at Olympique Marseille and played three times for his country's national team.

Club career

His father Gabriel Dard , who was a co-founder of Olympique Marseille in 1899, motivated the young Georges to join the youth department of the club, which took place in 1926. He then played in youth until he moved up during the 1936/37 season in the circle of the professional team, which then competed in the national first division. The 177 centimeter tall striker made his first division debut on January 9, 1937, at the age of 18, in a 4-1 win against RC Roubaix . Although this initially stayed with this single use, but secured him a membership in the championship team of 1937, as Marseille won the title at the end of the season. From 1937 to 1938 he played for league rivals FC Sète , where he was called up much more often and ultimately took third place in the table. After his return to Marseille, he became a regular player, even if he was not undisputed, and in 1939 just narrowly missed another win of the championship with second place.

In September 1939, the Second World War began and caused the game to be interrupted, but Dard, unlike many previous players, was able to continue playing football and take part in the unofficial staging of the championship with Marseille. He was on the field when his team contested the national cup final in 1940 and Racing Paris lost 2-1. A year later he was part of a team that won the championship of the southern French group. On October 4, 1942, he reached his personal goal record when he hit the target five times in a 20-2 victory in a league game against AS Avignon . The team made it into the cup final in 1943 , which had to be repeated after a 2-2 draw against Girondins Bordeaux ; in the replay Dard scored a goal, contributed to the 4-0 victory of his team and achieved the win of the trophy. When in the season 1943/44 regular club teams were not allowed, he played like most teammates in the jersey of the ÉF Marseille-Provence and then returned to Olympique.

In 1945, regular play continued and Dard continued to play for Marseille, with 14 hits in the 1945/46 season, the best goal haul of his career. In 1948 he was again national champion with his club. In the same year he turned his back not only on this country but also on his home country and moved to the Spanish first division club Sevilla FC . With the Spaniards, however, he could not prevail permanently, so he returned to Marseille in 1949. He immediately rejoined the team there, but had to live with worsened athletic conditions and in 1952, four years after the championship with his colleagues, was only just able to avert relegation. He remained a regular until he played his last first division match on January 10, 1954 in a 3-1 against the Stade Français at the age of 35. Then he was only a spectator and was not called up when his team lost the Cup final in 1954 with 1: 2 against OGC Nice . At the end of the 1953/54 season he ended his professional career after 238 first division games with 65 goals and 68 unofficial first division matches with 25 goals in France and ten first division games without a goal in Spain. He had 28 years behind him, during which he remained loyal to Olympique Marseille except for brief interruptions. From 1954 to 1955 he let end his career in a lower class club from Gardanne in the role of a player- coach.

National team

Dard was 28 years old when he made his debut for the French national team in a 4-0 win against the Netherlands on May 26, 1947, scoring the goal in the 75th minute to make it 3-0. He was last considered on May 27, 1950, when he was involved in a 1-0 loss to Scotland. In total, he played three internationals and scored twice. He did not get a nomination for an international tournament.
