Georgi Petrovich Bachmetev

Georgi Petrowitsch Bachmetew ( Russian Георгий Петрович Бахметев ; actually Juri Petrovich Bachmetew , Russian Юрий Петрович Бахметев ; * 1848 ; † August 29, 1928 in Paris ) was a Russian diplomat . In 1900 he was appointed Chamberlain and Councilor of State and in 1908 Hofmeister .

Life

Bachmetew came from a noble family and studied at Oxford University . In 1870 he joined the Russian Foreign Ministry. In 1874 he became Second Secretary of the Russian Embassy in the United States , in 1879 Second Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Paris and in 1883 First Secretary at the Russian Embassy in Athens . In 1897 he was appointed Ministre plénipotentiaire in Bulgaria . From 1908 to 1911 he was ambassador to Japan . Between 1908 and 1911 he worked in the Foreign Ministry. From 1911 to April 1917 he was the Russian Empire's ambassador to the United States.

After the February Revolution of 1917 he emigrated to France . Here he was committed to supporting Russian refugees and distributed tsarist propaganda materials. He died in exile in Paris in 1928 . He was buried in the Batignolles cemetery.

Bachmetev was not related to his successor in Washington , Boris Alexandrowitsch Bachmetjew .
