The Georgiberg is a 624 meter high mountain in the municipality of St. Kanzian southeast of the Klopeiner See in Carinthia, in an area that was settled by the Celts and Romans .
In the 13th century, the Klopeiner See was named after the church or castle as St. Georgs-See . The settlement at the foot of the Georgi mountain was therefore given the name Unterburg.
Gracarca hillside settlement
As early as 1927, Oswald Menghin found what he was looking for on this elongated rock ridge (625 m above sea level), which is separated from the Gracarca in the west by the Gespensterweg saddle . Wall and moat are still clearly visible on the west side, and are mostly assigned to prehistoric times . Other ramparts in the south of the church remain questionable. The finds date from the earliest iron to late Celtic times.
Catholic branch church hl. Georg on Georgiberg
The Georgi Church, which was first mentioned in a document between 1060 and 1070, stands on the Georgiberg. The church itself is the last remains of a ducal, medieval castle on Georgiberg, which is also documented as castrum in 1267/1268 . The cemetery, which was occupied until the previous century, stretched in the southern apron of the church. The Georgi Church is a late Gothic building (around 1500). The walls of the nave come from the Romanesque building from the 11th, the triangular groin vault in the nave from the 17th century. The simple altars of the Georgi Church date from the early 18th century. The representation of the apostles in the choir belongs to the period after 1500. The chapel in the south - today with the wishing bell - is a later extension.
A wishing bell hangs in the tower on the south side of the Georgi Church. In earlier times, virgins used to make pilgrimages to this bell. When the bell rang, they wished for a man and their wish should have come true. The Georgiberg is a popular destination that offers a good view of Lake Klopein and to Eberndorf .
